Hello! I’m bl4ckscor3, and I mostly create and maintain Minecraft mods! While those cover a big amount of my projects, I have also created software in different areas. Find a selection of my projects below!
Projects
Minecraft
My modding journey started in 2012, where I released a first few small modifications over on the Minecraft Forum.
Since then, I have released over 30 different mods of varying content and size. You can view all of my projects, many of which I still maintain, on CurseForge and Modrinth!
I am part of the development team of SecurityCraft, a mod focused on securing one’s own base and defending against intruders. It features block ownership, security cameras, proper passcode protection, secure wireless redstone, and a lot more.
With Sculk Transporting, a friend and I reached second place in the Forge Jam 2022! The mod adds item transportation over sculk signals.
We have also worked on Suspicious Zombification, a mod that adds zombified animals and some lore around the zombies’ curse! This was an entry to MMD SpookyJam 2021.
For some of MMD’s other mod jams, I created world generation and gameplay-enhancing mods:
Snow Under Trees adds snow under trees in snowy biomes, for a more snowy experience. (MMD Winter Jam 2019 entry)
Polarizing Biomes adds a few new winter-themed biomes. (MMD Winter Jam 2019 entry)
Snowmancy adds small customizable snowmen that fight by the player’s side. (MMD Winter Jam 2018 entry)
Scarecrows adds scarecrows, built similar to iron and snow golems. They scare mobs away! (MMD Spooky Jam 2018 entry)
Some of my mods were born through playing the game, and desiring certain functionality.
Sit simply allows players to sit down. Created because we wanted to watch the sunset in our jungle home!
Global XP allows sharing XP between players through a block placed in the world.
Ceiling Torch adds the ability for torches to be placed upside-down on the ceiling. This mod has extensive support for other mods’ torches!
Minecraft Servers
With a friend, we created AnimalEssentials, a plugin adding a bunch of utilities for animal/pet creation and management.
For a Minecraft server that never came to fruition, I created a website and staff application page.
A server that was run by the same team had several features created by me, including a dedicated Achievements plugin (which I later revamped), notifications for players being mentioned in chat (PlayerPing), and a general utilities plugin. This server revolves around SecurityCraft, and a form of it is still running to this day!
Eyewire/FlyWire
Eyewire and FlyWire are research projects from Princeton University with the goal of mapping neural structures within a mouse and fruit fly respectively. As these are helped by citizen scientists, the websites are gamified to a certain extent and as such have a scoring system and leaderboard. I’ve contributed to both projects through proofreading and completing data, as well as helping out within the community and programming 3rd party quality of life addons for the website.
Some projects include improving the visibility on the website’s leaderboard, or adding sorting functionality to a part of the game’s work log.
Find the rest of the addons I made for this project on my GitHub.
The research based on FlyWire has since been published in the nature magazine.
Miscellaneous
I expanded a game that was started by following a YouTube tutorial. It features a noise-based randomly generated world, a barebones inventory system, breakable trees, and bridging across water. I never had any specific goals with this, and just wanted to try things out.
Within my Computer Science studies, we worked together in a group to create an application that scrapes several websites for scientific papers and categorizes them into a database. A different group worked on a natural language processing UI that would interface with our database to provide information to users. Alongside some of the web scraping, I also wrote the REST API that served as the endpoint for the UI.
